YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM

The Scotia Festival of Music is now accepting applications to its 2009 Young Artist Program running from June 1to June 14, 2009. A Young Artist at Scotia Festival of Music is immersed in a two-week study of the art of music making.

YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM

Chosen by taped audition, advanced music students and young professionals from across North America and abroad, work intensively with Guest Artists receiving chamber music coaching, masterclasses, lectures, and performance opportunities. This year the Young Artist Program has space for 12 violins, 6 violas, 6, cellos, 4 bass, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassons, 6 trumpets, 4 french horns, 4 trombones, 2 tubas,1 harp, 4 percussion, 2 organs, 4 pianos, 2 singers

Application requirements are:

  • a recording containing two movements of contrasting style
  • two letters of recommendation
  • a resumé, and a
  • $10 Cdn processing fee.

The tuition fee this year is FREE in celebration of Scotia Festival of Music's 30th anniversary. The deadline for application is April 1, 2009.

Young Artist Program participants will be featured in their own highlight concert of solo and chamber works, the Young Artist Concert on June 7, plus a series of free public noon-hour recitals Monday through Friday of the festival’s second week and many of the Young Artists will play in the Scotia Festival Orchestra in the Final Gala Concert.

ACCOMMODATIONS

When accepted to the program you will receive an accommodation registration form. You will be asked what arrangement you would prefer; single, shared, with whom, billet, residence, etc. and we will assist in making the arrangements for you if you like. Remember, accommodations and food costs are not included in your tuition fees.

Scotia Festival of Music is very fortunate to have a strong network of volunteers who take Young Artists into their homes for the two weeks of the festival. They provide accommodation but are not expected to provide food. These billet homes are, eight times out of ten, within walking distance of Dalhousie University, where the festival takes place. These billet home are based on a first come first serve basis.

If you don’t want to be billeted, Dalhousie University residences are the way to go. Howe Hall is the closest, virtually across the street from the Dalhousie Arts Centre. TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING

The Metro bus system is very easy to use. Fares are $2.

Parking is difficult close to the university. Spaces are few and far between and usually limited to two hours. Parking becomes easier if you’re willing to walk a few blocks. You may still face some time restrictions.
